You can help protect yourself from infections when you get medical care. This is especially important when you get a medical procedure, like surgery or dialysis.

Take these steps to help prevent infections when you have a medical procedure:

Talk with your doctor or nurse about infections before your procedure.

Make sure your doctors, nurses, and visitors always wash their hands.

Carefully follow the instructions for preventing infections after your procedure.

How do medical procedures put people at risk for infections?
Germs can spread from one patient to another or from doctors to patients. You are at greater risk from germs that can cause infections if you have:

An open wound (cut) after surgery

An IV (intravenous) tube

A catheter (tube in your vein or bladder)

The good news is that patients and doctors can work together to prevent the spread of germs and the infections they cause.

Learn more about preventing infections at the hospital.

What types of infections can people get from medical procedures?
Infections people get from a visit to the hospital, health clinic, or doctor’s office are called healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

These infections can lead to sickness and even death. Blood infections and urinary tract infections from catheters are examples of HAIs.

Get tips on preventing these types of infections:

Urinary tract infections [PDF - 231 KB]

Pneumonia [PDF - 187 KB]

Blood infections [PDF - 195 KB]

MRSA (“MER-suh”) infections [PDF - 221 KB]

Surgical site infections [PDF - 213 KB]

C. diff (Clostridium difficile) infections [PDF - 183 KB]

How will I know if I have an infection?
Common signs that you may have an infection include:

Fever

Burning or pain below the stomach (the lower abdomen)

Burning when peeing (urinating) or having to pee more often than usual

Redness or pain around a catheter (tube in your vein or bladder) or wound (cut)

Pus or other liquid coming from the skin

Diarrhea (watery bowels)

I don’t want it to happen to me.”

If you are having any type of surgery, plan to protect yourself from infection.

Always make sure your doctors and nurses clean their hands.
Ask your doctors and nurses if their hands are clean. This is one of the most important ways to prevent infections. Even if they wear gloves, they still need to wash their hands. Wearing gloves alone is not enough to prevent infections.

If you feel uncomfortable asking the doctors or nurses if their hands are clean, remember that it’s their job to help keep you safe and healthy. Check out this patient’s guide to hand hygiene [PDF - 2 MB].

Ask your visitors to clean their hands, too.
Make sure your family members and friends wash their hands when they visit you. And if a loved one isn’t feeling well, ask her to call you instead of visiting in person.

Speak up if something doesn’t seem right.
Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions before or after your procedure. For example, if your bandages aren’t clean, dry, or attached well, point this out to the doctor or nurse right away.

If you get home and start to feel sick or notice signs of an infection, call your doctor or nurse right away.

Take steps to prevent infections after a procedure.

Wash your hands often, especially after you’ve had surgery. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before eating.

Make sure to wash your hands before touching a wound (cut) or catheter (tube in your vein or bladder).

Follow the instructions you are given for what to do after the procedure. For example, you might need to follow steps to keep a catheter clean.

If you have a catheter, have it removed as soon as you no longer need it.

Use medicines safely.
You may have antibiotics or other medicines you need to take after the procedure. Follow the instructions on when, how often, and how long you need to take your medicines.

Keep taking prescription medicines until your doctor tells you it’s okay to stop, even if you are feeling better.

Quit smoking.
People who smoke get more infections.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. If you have HIV, early treatment can help you live a longer, healthier life. The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested.

If you get tested at a doctor’s office or clinic, you can ask for a confidential test. The test results will be shared only with people allowed to see your medical records. Some clinics offer anonymous HIV testing. This means that you don’t have to give your name.

HIV testing is covered under the Affordable Care Act for people at risk for HIV. Depending on your insurance plan, you may be able to get tested at no cost to you. Talk to your insurance provider.

What do I ask the doctor?

Visiting the doctor can be stressful. It helps to have questions written down before your appointment. Take this list of questions with you when you visit the doctor or health clinic.

Should I get tested for HIV?

What puts me at risk for HIV?

How will you test me for HIV?

Who will see my test results?

How long will it take to get my test results?

How will I find out my results?

If I am HIV-positive, what will happen next?

If I am HIV-negative, how can I protect myself from HIV?

If I am HIV-negative, when do I need to get tested again?

If I am HIV-negative, does my sex partner still need to get tested for HIV?

Should I get tested for any other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)?

Do you offer counseling on HIV prevention?

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that mostly affects older men. After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men.

Many men have questions about prostate cancer screening (testing). Even though prostate cancer is common, screening for it isn’t recommended. The information below can help you start a conversation about prostate cancer with your doctor or nurse.

What is the prostate?

The male prostate is a small sex gland that makes fluid to carry sperm. It’s located below the bladder and in front of the rectum.

Who is at risk for prostate cancer?

Risk factors for prostate cancer include:

Being age 50 or older

Being African American

Having a father, brother, or son who had prostate cancer

Why isn’t screening recommended for prostate cancer?

Screening for prostate cancer isn’t recommended because the risks of screening and treatment outweigh the benefits.

Most of the time, prostate cancer grows so slowly that men won’t die from it or have any side effects.

The treatment of prostate cancer is more likely to cause medical problems than the prostate cancer itself.

The screening tests that are available now can’t tell if you have a cancer that will cause problems or not.

What do I ask the doctor?

Here are some questions you may want to ask your doctor or nurse:

What puts me at risk for prostate cancer?

Are there things I can do to lower my risk of prostate cancer?

What are the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening and treatment?

Are there any warning signs or symptoms of prostate cancer I should look out for?

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast to check for breast cancer. Mammograms can help find breast cancer early. You have a better chance of surviving breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

If you are age 40 or older, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.

Women ages 50 to 74 need mammograms every 2 years. You may choose to start getting mammograms earlier or to get them more often. Together, you and your doctor can decide what’s best for you.

Like all medical tests, mammograms have pros and cons. These pros and cons change with your age and your risk of breast cancer. Use the questions below to start a conversation with your doctor about mammograms.

Mammograms for women over age 40 are covered under the Affordable Care Act. Depending on your insurance plan, you may be able to get mammograms at no cost to you. Talk to your insurance provider.

What do I ask the doctor?

It helps to have questions for the doctor written down ahead of time. Print this list of questions, and take it to your next appointment. You may want to ask a family member or close friend to come with you to take notes.

Do I have risk factors for breast cancer?

I am under age 50:

Based on my risk factors, what are my chances of getting breast cancer?

Do you recommend that I start getting regular mammograms? If so, how often?

What are the pros and cons of getting mammograms before age 50?

I am between ages 50 and 74:

Based on my risk factors, what are my chances of getting breast cancer?

How often do I need to get mammograms?

What are the pros and cons of getting mammograms every 2 years instead of every year?

What happens during an appointment to get mammograms?

How long will it take to get the results of my mammograms?

If I don’t hear back from you about the results of my mammograms, should I assume everything is okay?

Menopause is when women stop getting their period. It’s also called “the change.” Menopause is different for each woman, but most women reach menopause around age 50.

As you get closer to menopause, your ovaries make less and less female hormones, called estrogen (“ES-tra-jin”) and progesterone (“pro-JES-ter-own”). Eventually, your body stops making them completely. Symptoms of menopause can include:

Irregular bleeding (more or less often than usual)

Hot flashes

Mood swings

Trouble sleeping

Decreased interest in sex (decreased libido)

Vaginal dryness

It can take 3 to 5 years to go through menopause. Menopause is finished when you haven’t had a period in 12 months. Once you’ve finished menopause, you won’t be able to get pregnant.

What do I ask the doctor?

Visiting the doctor can be stressful.

HPV vaccines (shots) can help protect people from serious diseases. HPV (human papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted disease. It can cause:

Cervical cancer in women

Genital warts and anal cancer in men and women

Doctors recommend that girls and boys get the HPV shots at age 11 or 12. The HPV vaccine works best when it’s given before a person is sexually active.

The HPV vaccine is covered under the Affordable Care Act. Depending on your insurance plan, your daughter or son may be able to get the vaccine at no cost to you. Talk to your insurance provider.

Use the following questions to start a conversation with your child’s doctor about the HPV vaccine.

What do I ask the doctor?

It helps to have questions for the doctor or nurse written down ahead of time. Print this list of questions, and take it to your child’s next appointment.

My child is younger than age 11. Is it too early to get the HPV vaccine?

My child is older than age 12. Is it too late to get the HPV vaccine?

I’m not sure if my child is sexually active. How do I know if the HPV vaccine is the right decision?

Are there different brands of HPV vaccine? Which brand do you recommend?

How many HPV shots does my child need?

How much time does my child need to wait between the shots?

What are the possible side effects of the HPV vaccine?

If my daughter gets the HPV vaccine, will she still need to get Pap tests to check for cervical cancer when she’s older?

What should I tell my child about preventing HPV?

Genetic counseling and testing can help you understand your risk for cancer. Genetic tests help doctors look for mutations (changes) in certain genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2. If you have these mutations, you are more likely to develop breast or ovarian cancer.

Talk with your doctor about genetic testing if:

Two or more close family members (parents, sisters, or children) have had breast or ovarian cancer

A close family member had breast cancer before age 50

A close family member has had cancer in both breasts

A family member has had both breast and ovarian cancer

You are of Eastern European Jewish heritage

If tests show that you are at high risk for getting breast or ovarian cancer, you and your doctor can discuss options for lowering your risk.

The Affordable Care Act covers counseling about genetic testing for some women. Depending on your insurance plan, you may be able to get counseling at no cost to you. Talk to your insurance provider.

What do I ask the doctor?

Visiting the doctor can be stressful. It helps to have questions written down before your appointment. Print these questions and take them with you the next time you visit the doctor.

What is my risk for developing breast or ovarian cancer?

Are there warning signs I should look out for?

Would you recommend genetic testing to learn more about my risk?

What are the benefits and risks of getting tested?

What are my chances of having a mutated (changed) gene that could increase my risk for cancer?

If I have a mutated gene, what options will be available to me?

What would a positive or negative test result mean for me?

If I get tested, who will be able to see my test results?

Besides mutated genes, what other things increase my risk for breast and ovarian cancer?

What types of cancer screenings are recommended if I decide not to do genetic testing?

Is there information I can take with me about preventing breast or ovarian cancer?

Gestational (“jes-TAY-shon-al”) diabetes is a type of diabetes that some women develop during pregnancy. When you have diabetes, there is too much glucose (sugar) in your blood.

If you develop gestational diabetes, it can lead to health problems for you and your baby during and after pregnancy. For example:

Before birth, your baby is likely to grow bigger than usual. This could make giving birth more difficult – and make it more likely that you will have a caesarian section (C-section).

After your baby is born, your baby may be at risk for childhood obesity.

You will be at risk for developing type 2 diabetes after pregnancy.

Usually there are no symptoms (signs) of gestational diabetes. That’s why it’s important for all pregnant women to get tested between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

If you have gestational diabetes, you and your doctor or midwife can work together to protect your health and your baby’s health.

Testing for gestational diabetes is covered under the Affordable Care Act. Depending on your insurance plan, you may be able to get screened at no cost to you.

What do I ask the doctor?

Visiting the doctor can be stressful.
