The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting public health activities in the United States. CDC's Mission is to collaborate to create the expertise, information, and tools that people and communities need to protect their health – through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury and disability, and preparedness for new health threats. CDC is composed of the Office of the Director, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Center for Global Health, and five Offices, including Public Health Preparedness and Response; State and Local Support; Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services; Noncommunicable Diseases, Injury and Environmental Health; and Infectious Diseases. CDC employs more than 15,000 employees in more than 50 countries and in 168 occupational categories.

FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition

The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) is one of five product-oriented centers of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The mission of CFSAN is to promote and protect the public health and economic interest by ensuring that the food supply is safe, nutritious, wholesome, and honest and that cosmetics are safe and properly labeled. In order to accomplish its mission CFSAN ensures that consumers are fully informed about the food and cosmetic products they buy; protects the public health through scientific research in food and nutrition; ensures accurate labeling of food; and educates consumers about diet and nutrition.

Food Safety and Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), a public health agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ensures that the nation's commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged as required by the Federal Meat Inspection Act, The Poultry Products Inspection Act, and the Egg Products Inspection Act. FSIS inspects all meat, poultry and egg products sold in interstate and foreign commerce, including imports. FSIS also inspects products during processing, handling, and packaging to ensure that they are safe and truthfully labeled. Through the Agency's Meat and Poultry Hotline (1-888-674-6854) and consumer education programs, the public is informed on how to properly handle, prepare, and store meat, poultry, and egg products to minimize the growth of foodborne pathogens.

National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

CDC's National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) aims to detect, prevent, and control infectious diseases from spreading, whether they are naturally occurring, unintentional, or the result of terrorism. With a focus on diseases that have been around for many years, emerging diseases (those that are new or just recently identified), and zoonotic diseases (those spread from animals to people), NCEZID's work recognizes the vital interconnectedness of microbes and the environment, and involves many scientific disciplines to attain better health for humans and animals and improve our environment. Each of the center’s seven divisions works with partners to protect and improve the public’s health in the United States and worldwide.

NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases - NIDDK

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts and supports research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health. The Institute supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspecialty fields, as well as many basic science disciplines. The Institute's Division of Intramural Research encompasses the broad spectrum of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, inborn errors of metabolism, endocrine disorders, mineral metabolism, digestive and liver diseases, nutrition, urology and renal disease, and hematology. Basic research studies include biochemistry, biophysics, nutrition, pathology, histochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical and molecular biology, and pharmacology. NIDDK extramural research is organized into 4 divisions: Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases; Digestive Diseases and Nutrition; Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases; and Extramural Activities.
