Dietary Guidelines

Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, U.S. Department of Agriculture

The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion was created within the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1994, and reports to the Office of the Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services. CNPP’s mission is to improve the health of Americans by developing and promoting dietary guidance that links scientific research to the nutrition needs of consumers. The staff at CNPP is composed primarily of nutritionists, nutrition scientists, dietitians, economists, and policy experts. CNPP staff help to define and coordinate nutrition education policy within USDA and to translate nutrition research into information and materials for consumers; policymakers; and professionals in health, education, industry, and media. CNPP carries out its mission to improve the health of Americans by (1) advancing and promoting food and nutrition guidance for all Americans; (2) assessing diet quality; and (3) advancing consumer, nutrition, and food economic knowledge.

Food and Nutrition Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture

This division of the USDA is responsible for the administration of all USDA's nutrition assistance programs -- Food Stamps; WIC Program /Farmers' Market; Child Nutrition; Team Nutrition; and Food Distribution. The mission of the FNS is to provide children and needy families better access to food and a more healthful diet through its food assistance programs and comprehensive nutrition education efforts.

NIH Office of Dietary Supplements - ODS

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (Public Law 103-417, DSHEA), authorized the establishment of the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the NIH. The ODS was created in 1995 within the Office of Disease Prevention (ODP), Office of the Director (OD), NIH. The mission of ODS is to strengthen knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements by evaluating scientific information, stimulating and supporting research, disseminating research results, and educating the public to foster an enhanced quality of life and health for the U.S. population.

Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

The mission of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) is to provide leadership for disease prevention and health promotion among Americans. ODPHP undertakes this mandate through the formulation of national health goals and objectives; the coordination of the Department of Health and Human Services activities in disease prevention, health promotion, preventive health services, and health information and education with respect to the appropriate use of health care; and the stimulation of public and private programs and strategies to enhance the health of the Nation. ODPHP is organized around four areas: prevention policy, clinical preventive services, nutrition policy, health communication, and Telehealth. ODPHP's Prevention Policy oversaw the development of HEALTHY PEOPLE 2000, the national prevention agenda, and manages the process by which progress is monitored. ODPHP's Clinical Preventive Services staff promote the appropriate use of immunizations, screening tests, patient counseling, and other prevention activities in clinical settings. The staff coordinate the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and its development of age- and sex-specific guidelines for preventive services. ODPHP acts as a catalyst for activities that strengthen the Department's capabilities and national leadership in nutrition research, nutrition monitoring, nutrition services and training, nutrition education, food safety and quality, and international nutrition. ODPHP promotes improved access to health information through coordination of Federal health information resources and partnerships with local channels, such as libraries. ODPHP manages the Federal gateway to consumer health information on the Internet, healthfinder (www.healthfinder.gov). ODPHP also operates the National Health Information Center (NHIC). The Science Panel on Interactive Communication and Health (SciPICH) is promoting the evaluation of effective communication technology for health information and education.

President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition

The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) is a committee of up to 25 volunteer citizens appointed by the President to serve in an advisory capacity through the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Through its programs and partnerships with the public, private and non-profit sectors, PCFSN acts as a catalyst to promote healthy lifestyles through fitness, sports and nutrition programs and initiatives that educate, empower and engage Americans of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
