NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Clearinghouse

The NCCAM Clearinghouse provides information on complementary and alternative medicine, including publications and searches of Federal databases of scientific and medical literature. The clearinghouse does not provide medical advice, treatment recommendations, or referrals to practitioners. The Clearinghouse is staffed by trained Information Specialists Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. ET.

NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases - NIDDK

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts and supports research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health. The Institute supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspecialty fields, as well as many basic science disciplines. The Institute's Division of Intramural Research encompasses the broad spectrum of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, inborn errors of metabolism, endocrine disorders, mineral metabolism, digestive and liver diseases, nutrition, urology and renal disease, and hematology. Basic research studies include biochemistry, biophysics, nutrition, pathology, histochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical and molecular biology, and pharmacology. NIDDK extramural research is organized into 4 divisions: Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases; Digestive Diseases and Nutrition; Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases; and Extramural Activities.

NIH Weight-Control Information Network, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

The Weight-Control Information Network (WIN) was established by the National Institutes of Health's (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in June 1994. WIN provides the general public, health professionals, the media, and Congress with up-to-date, science-based information on weight control, obesity, physical activity, and related nutritional issues. The Weight-control Information Network at WIN responds to E- mail, written and telephone requests for information, and provides a variety of written materials on obesity, weight control, and nutritional disorders.

Calorie Control Council

The Calorie Control Council, established in 1966, is an international association representing the low-calorie and diet food and beverage industry. The Council seeks to provide an effective channel of communication among its members, the public, and government officials, and to assure that scientific, medical, and other pertinent research and information is developed and made available to all interested parties. The Council has sponsored numerous studies on low-calorie sweeteners, foods, and beverages. It supports the availability of aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and acesulfame K and the approvals of alitame and cyclamate. The Council also supports the continued availability of current fat substitutes and caloric dietary sweeteners. The approval of additional safe low-caloric sweeteners, fat substitutes, and other dietary ingredients is encouraged.

Shape Up America!

Shape Up America! is a non-profit national initiative to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating and increased physical activity for weight management and disease prevention. Founded by former U.S. Surgeon C. Everett Koop in 1994, Shape Up America! relies on a broad coalition of industry, medical, health, nutrition and physical fitness experts to develop and communicate information to the public and to health care professionals. It has three broad objectives: promote a new understanding by Americans of the health importance of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and increasing physical activity; provide science-based information on the assessment and treatment of obesity; and increase cooperation among national and community organizations committed to advancing healthy weight and increased physical activity as major public health priorities. The Shape Up America! website--www.shapeup.org--is designed to communicate with the public, health care professionals, educators and the media.

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly)

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a, nonprofit, weight-loss support and wellness education organization. Established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success, TOPS promotes successful, affordable weight management with a philosophy that combines healthy eating, regular exercise, wellness information, awards and recognition, and support from others at weekly chapter meetings. TOPS is comprised of men, women, and children age 7 and older, with about 170,000 members in nearly 10,000 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge.
